Conservatism is not libertarian
Libertarians strive for a world set free. Not simply set free from oppressive government, but from oppression in all forms. It’s for this reason that no matter who tries, or how hard they try, Conservatism and the racism, sexism, and bigotry that so often follows, is not congruent with being libertarian.
It’s easy to be confused when you see prominent conservatives claiming to be libertarian. These charlatans latch onto the inherently appealing message of freedom, while simultaneously advocating for anti-libertarian concepts. Bigots and racists cannot legitimately exist in an organization that values the rights of all individuals, especially when they believe that some individuals don’t even have the basic right to exist!
As Libertarians we must reject these impostors. We aim to grow the party and the overall liberty community. We must strive to attract the oppressed people who are currently being driven away by the presence and prominence of so many would-be oppressors in our party. If we don’t, we’ll perpetuate the erroneous belief that most libertarians care nothing about actually ENDING racism and sexism.
Even if they are not inherently bigots themselves, conservatives who claim to be libertarian, yet refuse to take a stand against racism, sexism, and bigotry ultimately have the effect of perpetuating a convenient bogeyman for governments to blame problems on, or a rationalization for oppressive statist policies.
The Libertarian Platform states in part:
"3.5 Rights and Discrimination
Libertarians embrace the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights…We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant.”
We must take a stand and stop conservatives from co-opting libertarianism and distorting the otherwise pure concept of individual liberty.
